The Fourth Gospel is a real challenge! Startlingly speeches come out of Jesus’ mouth, different from his words reported in the other gospels. The story line is different. And there are real tensions between the all-inclusive love of God, abiding in love and communion with Christ, and harsh words of exclusivity and judgment. Newer scholarship has revealed that this is Gospel is rooted in a mystical, apocalyptic strand in second Temple Judaism, with Jesus seen as the earthly embodiment of Divine Wisdom, Sophia.
Enormously influential, both for good and ill in Christian history, it has sustained the mystical practice of “making one’s home in God,” and fostering an ethic of love, but also (mistakenly?) fueling anti-Semitism and the damnation of non-Christians. We’ll unlock the secrets of this skillfully crafted, highly archetypal and symbol work, chapter by chapter. The Reverend Robert C. Morris, founder of Interweave leads this new look into John’s Gospel.
This program is scheduled to be at Calvary Church in Summit, with some outdoor meetings as weather allows and plans to move online in the winter months or in response to the progression of the pandemic.
